The layout of the screen which displays details of items (backlog items, defects, requests, and so forth) is cluttered and difficult to see relevant information. Useful information is split across multiple tabs. Blank fields are show, creating noise - this is particularly bad on the relationships screen, as a story may not have many relationships yet lots of space is used.

Comparing the layout here to that used by other tools, such as JIRA, it is just a muddled mess. My daily life would be a lot more pleasant if this UI were to be improved.

Comments

  • I agree that the details dialogs have grown to a point where it might be time to revisit this layout based on usage. It's not bad, but it could be better.

  • This is good, but not specific enough. How about a customized 'quick-look' at the asset? I'll add an idea for that...

  • I'd like to see a parenthetical number appended to each of the tab names, like "Links (2) Attachments (1)" so you can tell at a glance that content exists. Even an asterisk * would help. Without some indicator, a user viewing a backlog item in the popup is likely to feel they need to row through every tab looking for additional detail so they don't miss anything important. I find I end up having to row through the tabs every single time I view an item, because I can't remember from one visit to the next which items have details in those tabs.

I just found the "Additional Details" column which can be added to any grid which at least tells you when Links, Discussion and Attachments do exist. Likewise for the mouseover on Title and ID, just discovered that. You could add Tasks and Tests to that icon list, or even put those in a separate column.

  • Doesn't the "Summary" tab provide the view you are asking for?

  • The Detail View was redesigned in the Spring 2011 release combining the details, relationships, links and attachments tabs into a single default view. Attributes are grouped into related groups and a two column layout is used to aid readability. Also a new relationship summary bar shows the existing relationships and their counts.
