Right now, I can only add URLs to roadmap items. Therefore the roadmap item is agnostic as to what kind of item it's linked to.
It would be useful to allow roadmap items to tie to various assets in V1, e.g. epics, feature groups or goals. If a roadmap item could have a drop-down determining what kind of asset to tie it to, a 2nd drop-down could be used to select the actual asset. This allows for flexibility.
Once tied to an asset, the hover functionality should be enabled as well as the ability to drill down (link to) the respective asset.
Last not least, this could also pave the way for progress bars similar to epics.

It is possible to reference Epics, Goals, Projects, Themes (Feature Groups), Stories and Defects to a roadmap item, as of the Winter 2011 release.
