The option to disable conversations as a feature should be available to customers who do not want to use them.

they are too obtrusive on the details pages. need to be able to disable them.
Conversations is always "on" though we understand your needs. We're
currently working on a new design that will give you the full space you
need for item details while still making conversations useful when you choose to use the feature.

Since this is a replacement for Note/Discussions, I don't think it should be disabled. I do believe there should at least be a retractable tab like there is for the My Projects area.
The Fall '10 point release contains key updates for conversations within asset details pages. When there are no conversations mentioning an asset, then that asset's details page will devote the full page width to the details. When there are conversations then they are shown in a tighter design, and the user can choose to collapse the conversations to allow full page width to the asset details. These design improvements apply to screen and print layouts.
The improvements were introduced in point release 10.3.638.0
