I've been spending a lot of time closing a conversation before I finish typing. Why? Because story information I'm writing the conversation about is hidden behind an unmoveable conversation box. Think of all the time (and frustration) I would save if I could just click on the box and drag it further down the screen and continue typing uninterrupted.

I totally agree. My "workaround" (which is unfortunate) is to log onto an second session of V1 and go back to the story I am talking about to get some info about it for my conversation point to be made.
Why not have the profile option to open dialogs in either the "Ajax" panel or a separate window. The newer browsers don't have much of a penalty for opening a new window.
This has been addressed with the redesigned threaded conversations in asset detail views. The new design shows threaded conversations and embeds interactions in-line. This means that starting a conversation or replying to one no longer renders the UI components over top of details of the asset, instead those component are inserted inline for a more direct interaction that still provides full access the other information.
